A Winter Reset at Cycads on Sea

When we arrived at Cycads on Sea Guesthouse in St Francis Bay, we were greeted with the warmest welcome. Our host immediately made us feel right at home; giving us a little tour and making sure we knew where everything was. A cozy first impression after a long journey really sets the tone for the stay, relaxed, cosy and exactly the kind of break we needed.

“The landing of a comfortable generously sized bed was just as good of a welcome!”

Yours, Mine, and Ours

The kids (aged 4 and 6) were over the moon to discover the loft space which became their own little hideaway (and lookout tower apparently!). They loved having their own “room within a room,” while we enjoyed the peace of mind that they were still close-by. The main bed was unbelievably comfortable, fitted with heated sheets; such a treat on a cool winter’s evening.

We also loved the thoughtful touches in our room: a small fridge and coffee station complete with bathrobes for early morning coffees outside in our private little spot. Those slow, quiet moments were some of my favourites.

Outdoor Living

Although we didn’t get around to having a braai this time, I’d recommend it to anyone visiting. The outdoor braai kitchen sits right beside a sparkling pool, the perfect spot to gather after an afternoon of swimming. I can easily picture a sunset braai there with kids still splashing around while the adults relax with something cold in hand and greet the stars with a full belly, sun-kissed skin and sleep-ready eyes.

Shared Spaces with Intention

Cycads on Sea isn’t just about private corners; the communal areas are designed to be enjoyed. There’s a big family-style table and bar overlooking the ocean (a proper live surf forecast), shelves of books and even board games. We had a good laugh and bonding over Battleships one evening and I very graciously took the win. It’s the kind of space that feels lived in where you’re naturally drawn in to linger.

Breakfast with a Smile

If I had to pick a highlight, it may be the breakfast. Dianna’s hot breakfast was delicious, 100% made with love. It was her warm smile and joyful energy that really made our mornings special. She even set out hot chocolate for the kids (and for me) while fresh fruit fuelled our little morning walks.

Exploring St Francis & Beyond

One of the best parts about staying here is the location. It’s only a short stroll to Granny’s Pool -a tidal pool perfect for families and the coastal trail is ideal for stretching your legs and breathing in the sea air.

We also took a drive out to Jeffreys Bay for the JBay Open, an incredible experience! Riley (our eldest) even snagged a photo with Yago Dora, a memory for the books.

Closer to home we spotted whales at the Seal Point lighthouse (cinnamon bun and coffee in hand), enjoyed a balmy evening surf and indulged in some local eats for dinner. The St Francis Brewery was a hit, and for takeaways a giant 50cm New York Slice pizza was the ultimate winner.

Winter, Who’s that?

I honestly can’t believe how magical St Francis is in the winter period. The combination of cosy indoor comforts and endless outdoor adventure makes it a special kind of getaway. We left feeling refreshed, grateful, and already planning our return.
